WASHINGTON – Roseanne Barr, the creator and star of the hit television show, “Roseanne,” was fired by ABC today in response to a racist tweet she posted about Valerie Jarrett, a former adviser to President Obama. Early Tuesday morning, Barr tweeted, “if muslim brotherhood and planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” Barr initially defended the joke and dismissed any claims that the comment was racist. She added “ISLAM is not a RACE, lefties. Islam includes EVERY RACE of people.”
About a half hour later, Barr deleted the initial post about Ms. Jarrett and released an apology on twitter, writing, “I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me – my joke was in bad taste.” She also announced, “I am now leaving Twitter.”
Unfortunately, the damage was already done and the backlash began. From Rev. Al Sharpton to MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, many stars took to social media to condemn Barr’s comments. Wanda Sykes, who served as consulting producer on the “Roseanne” reboot announced that she was leaving the sitcom.
Hours later, ABC President, Channing Dungey, who in 2016 became the first African-American president of a major broadcast TV network, released a statement writing, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”
But President Trump made it clear that he was not offended by Roseanne’s comments and not only did he tweet his support for the comedian, he hired her. Moments ago Trump tweeted, “The fake news is trying to divide America and @ABC is playing right into it. @therealroseanne did nothing wrong other than making a funny joke. That’s her job. SAD! #WitchHunt”
In true Trump fashion, POTUS then announced on Twitter that he will be replacing Victoria Lipnic, Acting Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) with Roseanne Barr if she would accept the job. He wrote, “America needs less politically-correct people in Government. That’s why I am officially offering @therealroseanne the position of Acting Chair at the EEOC. Should she accept, I will insist that our elected officials confirm her nomination.” #MAGA
Lipnic was named Acting Chair of the EEOC by President Trump on January 25, 2017 and has been serving as a Commissioner at the agency since 2010.
Barr did not reply to the President’s job offer publicly and HFN’s multiple requests for comment have not been returned by Roseanne or the White House. According to the agency’s website, “The EEOC is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person’s race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.”
Many in Washington are concerned that Barr doesn’t have the experience to lead such an important agency, but if President Trump supports her, the rest will follow.
